Udupi: In light of potential landslides triggered by ongoing heavy rainfall and the movement of large vehicles, the district administration has imposed restrictions on heavy vehicle traffic along the Agumbe Ghati stretch of National Highway 169A (Thirthahalli–Malpe Road). This precautionary measure aims to ensure public safety during the monsoon season.
District Magistrate Dr. K. Vidyakumari issued the order under Section 115 of the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Sections 221(A)(2) and (5) of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The restriction will be in force from June 15 to September 30, during which time only light vehicles will be permitted to ply through the Agumbe Ghati section.
The directive specifically prohibits the movement of heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses on this hilly route, which is known for its sharp curves and vulnerability to landslides during the monsoon months.
As per the order, heavy vehicles traveling from Udupi to Thirthahalli must take a detour via Udupi–Kundapur–Siddhapura–Mastikatte–Thirthahalli. Authorities have urged transporters and commuters to comply strictly with the new traffic rules to avoid accidents or road blockages caused by landslides or vehicle breakdowns.
The administration emphasized that the move is a preventive step to protect lives and infrastructure, and urged the public to cooperate fully during this period.
