A portion of a hill near Ottinene collapsed late Wednesday, depositing mud alongside NH 66 near Byndoor. The collapse, triggered by days of intermittent rainfall that saturated the soil, remains a concern as the remaining hill could collapse at any moment. Previously, fire service personnel levelled the top of the hill to prevent a larger landslide.
About one to two tipper truckloads of mud were cleared swiftly with a JCB, leaving traffic unaffected. IRB officials took precautions to prevent further collapses, including plastering vulnerable areas near Raghavendra Math.
Meanwhile, Someshwara Hill is also eroding due to rainfall, worsened by unauthorised road construction for resort development. The Kshitija Nesara resort is now at risk, despite repeated local complaints.
