Udupi: As tensions continue to simmer following the murder of Hindu activist and rowdy sheeter Suhas Shetty, a home guard from Karkala has been arrested for posting a threatening comment on social media targeting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
According to police sources, the accused, Sampath Salian, was working at the Home Guard office in Bengaluru. He allegedly posted a message stating, “Hindus will be at peace if CM Siddaramaiah is killed.” The post quickly drew public attention and sparked outrage, prompting authorities to take swift action.
Arrest and investigation
The Karkala police took Salian into custody following a formal complaint. His arrest comes amidst heightened scrutiny of inflammatory and retaliatory content being circulated online in the aftermath of Suhas Shetty’s murder in Mangaluru.
Eight individuals have so far been arrested in connection with Shetty’s killing, and investigations are still underway. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have ramped up cyber monitoring efforts to curb provocative online activity that could incite further unrest.
Caution against hate speech
Authorities have reiterated that strict action will be taken against those spreading hate or inciting violence through social media platforms. The arrest of a serving home guard underscores the state’s zero-tolerance stance on inflammatory public statements, regardless of the individual’s profession or position.
