Udupi: In a coordinated raid, the Food and Civil Supplies Department, along with Hiriyadka police, uncovered a major case of misappropriation of government rice meant for free distribution under the Anna Bhagya scheme.
The operation was conducted at Prabhu General Store in the Mambettu area of Bommarabettu village following a tip-off. Led by the Udupi food inspector and supported by PSI Puneeth Kumar B E, and constables Adarsh and Karthik, the team seized 55 quintals and 60 kilograms of illegally stored rice.
The rice, valued at ₹1,27,880, was found packed in 131 plastic bags. Officials confirmed that it was part of the free ration distributed under the state government’s Anna Bhagya scheme and had been unlawfully purchased from the public.
Vasudeva Prabhu (56), son of Keshava Prabhu and a resident of Kukkadakatte, Bommarabettu, was taken into custody and presented before the court. The entire stock was seized in the presence of food department authorities.
A formal case has been registered at the Hiriyadka Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
