The long-anticipated bowstring girder installation for the Indrali Railway Overbridge on National Highway 169A, connecting Udupi and Manipal, was successfully completed by the evening of May 13. The project, undertaken with prior railway department approval, began on May 12 at 11:30 AM.

Spanning 60 meters and weighing roughly 450 metric tons, the steel girder had been assembled over the past year near the Indrali petrol station. Skilled welders worked diligently during this period to construct the massive structure.

Once fabrication was complete, the bridge was moved into its final position using ‘Gribs’ technology. This innovative method involved stacking gribs and laying temporary tracks on top, enabling the heavy girder to be guided across the span using mechanical power.

As railway tracks lie several feet below, the girder was cautiously positioned and secured onto pre-cast concrete blocks on either side of the overpass. For safety, installation activities were paused during the passage of trains.

The operation followed strict safety protocols and concluded within two days, marking a major milestone in regional infrastructure development.

MP Kota Srinivas Poojary, who inspected the site on day one, noted, “Minor technical adjustments remain. Following final alignment, a concrete deck will be constructed atop the girder for vehicular traffic.”

This successful installation is expected to significantly ease traffic flow between Udupi and Manipal, enhancing connectivity and commuter safety.
