Udupi: Udupi–Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary has urged the Central Government to expedite the upgradation and doubling of the entire Konkan Railway line, which serves as a crucial coastal corridor linking Kerala and Mangaluru with Goa and Maharashtra. Raising the matter under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha, he emphasised that improved connectivity, smoother train operations, and enhanced passenger convenience are urgently needed along the busy route.
The MP highlighted that the Konkan Railway is vital not only for daily commuters but also for interstate travellers, freight operators, and the tourism sector. However, development along the line has remained slow due to administrative delays and funding constraints.
States agree to merger, but procedural delays continue
Poojary noted that the governments of Kerala and Goa have already expressed their approval for the merger of the Konkan Railway Corporation (KRCL) with Indian Railways. Karnataka and Maharashtra, he added, are also reportedly supportive of the merger. Despite this, procedural bottlenecks have stalled progress, affecting expansion and modernisation plans across various stations and sections of the route.
According to the MP, the delay has resulted in slower implementation of infrastructure projects and has prevented the timely commencement of long-pending works. He said that the merger would streamline administrative processes, ensure steady funding, and help accelerate key development initiatives.
Existing single line limiting operations
The Konkan Railway currently operates on a largely single-line track, which restricts the introduction of new trains and increases operational stress on the network. Poojary pointed out that the track’s capacity constraints often lead to delays, congestion, and limitations on both passenger and freight movement — an issue that has been repeatedly raised by travellers and local representatives.
He added that KRCL has been facing financial challenges, affecting its ability to undertake track-doubling, signalling upgrades, and improvements to passenger amenities. The lack of adequate funding has slowed down modernisation efforts, leaving several stations without required infrastructural enhancements.
Call to prioritise passenger interest
Expressing concern over the prolonged procedural delays and coordination issues among agencies, Poojary urged the Central Government to take up the matter on priority. He stressed that widening and doubling the line between Mangaluru and Mumbai must begin at the earliest to improve safety, reduce travel time, and allow the introduction of additional trains on the route.
The MP reiterated that the project is essential for the growing passenger base and for supporting trade, tourism, and economic exchanges along the western coast. He appealed to the government to intervene swiftly and ensure that the Konkan Railway receives the necessary administrative and financial support to move forward with doubling works.
