Udupi: A large tree collapsed onto a residence in Mathadabettu, located along Bhagat Singh Road within Kundapur Municipality limits, early Friday morning. The incident occurred amid strong winds and persistent rainfall, resulting in significant property damage.

The house, belonging to Vasanti Devadiga, sustained heavy impact as the tree crashed onto its terrace. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the residents were safely indoors. The Yaksheshwari temple, situated nearby, was also struck before the tree finally fell on the house. Though the building’s concrete structure prevented a major disaster, the sheet-roofed front portion was completely wrecked.

In addition to the structural damage, two motorcycles and a car parked under the covered area were crushed. The falling tree also brought down several power lines, breaking and uprooting three to four electric poles in the vicinity, causing a disruption in electricity supply.

Municipal authorities from Kundapur acted swiftly. Officials and emergency workers arrived at the site shortly after the incident to begin the removal of the fallen tree and assess the extent of the destruction. Restoration efforts are currently underway.

Local residents have urged authorities to inspect old or weak trees across the town, especially in areas vulnerable to storms, to prevent such potentially hazardous incidents in the future.

The unexpected weather event highlights the risks posed by seasonal monsoon conditions and the importance of timely maintenance and preparedness.
