On November 3, an on-duty medical officer, Dr. Moorthiraj (48), was verbally abused and nearly assaulted by a patient’s husband at the Kundapur government hospital in Udupi. Around 11:15 pm, Dr. Moorthiraj, who has served as an emergency care doctor at the hospital for over two years, was attending to Radha, a woman with stomach pain, in the presence of nurse Shobha Kumari. After consultation, he recommended that Radha be admitted as an in-patient, informing her husband, Nagaraj Bijadi, to proceed with the admission.
However, Radha and Nagaraj abruptly left the hospital. Approximately 30 minutes later, Nagaraj returned, forcibly entered the emergency room, and began verbally abusing Dr. Moorthiraj. He also took Radha’s medical records, tore official documents on the doctor’s table, and issued death threats, accompanied by another woman who joined in the verbal abuse.
A case has since been registered at Kundapur Police Station based on Dr. Moorthiraj’s complaint.
