Udupi: The compound of the Primary Health Centre located near the City Municipality Office on Kavi Muddanna Road has become a potential hotspot for mosquito breeding, owing to unchecked weed and bush growth.

Ironically, an institution meant to promote health and hygiene is surrounded by unsanitary conditions, causing concern among local residents and health advocates. The thick vegetation has also become a refuge for venomous snakes and harmful insects, increasing the risk to public safety.

With the monsoon season underway, fears are rising about the possible outbreak of vector-borne diseases like dengue and malaria. The unchecked overgrowth, if not addressed promptly, could fuel the spread of illness from a facility meant to prevent it.

Local social activist Nityananda Olakadu highlighted that this has become an annual issue, especially during the rains. He proposed a long-term solution—leveling the ground and installing cement tiles to block weed growth and discourage mosquito breeding.

Echoing these concerns, Tharanath Mesta Shiruru of the Udupi District Citizens Committee joined in urging the health department and municipal authorities to intervene swiftly and decisively. Both emphasized the need for regular upkeep and pre-monsoon cleaning around health institutions to protect public health.

It is imperative that the authorities take immediate action to clear the overgrown vegetation and maintain sanitary conditions around this vital facility.
