MP Poojary Slams Govt Over Janivara Ban at CET Centres
Udupi – Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary has strongly criticized the state government following reports that students were asked to remove their Janivara (sacred thread) during the CET examinations on April 18 in centres like Shivamogga and Bidar.
In a video statement, Mr. Poojary said such a directive could not have been issued without the awareness of senior officials or the Education Minister, suggesting government complicity. He accused the administration of repeatedly offending Hindu sentiments, recalling earlier instances when women were told to remove Mangala Suthra, earrings, and other religious symbols at exam halls.
He stressed that not just Brahmins, but also communities like the Gowda Saraswath Brahmins, Vishwakarmas, and others wear the Janivara as part of their deep-rooted spiritual traditions.
“The government’s insistence on removing these symbols of faith is unjust and insensitive,” he said, adding that such actions erode religious liberty and suggest selective enforcement. If the Minister genuinely was unaware, strict action must be taken against those responsible to prevent recurrence.
Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna echoed these concerns, alleging that the Congress-led government was enabling hijab-wearing Muslim women to enter exam centres, but denying entry to Hindu students for wearing sacred threads or mangalsutras. He accused the government of double standards and discrimination.
Both leaders have urged immediate correction and respect for all religious identities in public settings.
