Over 300 olive ridley hatchlings return to the ocean in Byndoor
In a remarkable conservation effort, more than 300 olive ridley turtle hatchlings were successfully released into the sea near Tarapathi Beach, Byndoor, after 50 days of dedicated protection.
The turtles laid their eggs in late January, prompting the Forest Department and local conservation groups to set up natural hatcheries. Two weeks ago, 115 hatchlings were released, followed by 85 last week. On Monday morning, 105 more baby turtles made their way to the ocean, completing the third batch.
Officials, local fishermen, and volunteers meticulously monitored the process under the leadership of Kundapura sub-divisional forest officer Ganapathi K, assistant forest officer Prakash Poojary, and Byndoor range forest officer Sandesh Kumar. Their combined efforts ensured the hatchlings’ safe journey to the sea, marking a significant win for marine conservation.
