Udupi: On the auspicious occasion of Sri Krishna Janmashtami, Sri Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji of Puttige Math offered the traditional Arghya (libation) to Lord Krishna at Sri Krishna Math, shortly after midnight on Monday, September 15. The ritual was performed in the presence of other Swamijis of the Math, and devotees were later allowed to offer Arghya with devotion.

Midnight ritual marks divine appearance

The Arghya ceremony commenced at 12:11 am, in accordance with the Hindu calendar, marking the exact birth moment of Lord Krishna. Devotees observed a day-long fast on Sunday, which continued until the libation was offered.

Following the ritual, the Swamiji took a ritual dip in the Math pond, performed a special puja, and offered Arghya to Lord Krishna. Upon completion, the fast was broken by the Swamijis and devotees alike, in keeping with tradition. Janmashtami is customarily observed with the midnight Arghya, ritual dip, puja, and fast-breaking to celebrate the divine arrival of Lord Krishna, who descended on earth to annihilate demons.

Vitlapindi celebrations to follow

The Krishna Leelotsava (Vitlapindi) celebrations are scheduled to take place on Car Street at 3 pm on Monday, September 15. Devotees will be served Anna Prasadam starting at 11 am, and a large gathering is expected to participate in the colourful festivities.

Conclusion

The midnight Arghya and traditional rituals reaffirm Udupi’s rich spiritual heritage and devotion to Lord Krishna, setting the stage for the grand Vitlapindi celebrations later in the day.
