Udupi: A pedestrian sustained grievous injuries after being run over by a crane at Perampalli, near Herga Society, in a serious roadside accident reported on Tuesday. The crane driver allegedly fled the scene immediately after the incident, which was captured on nearby CCTV cameras.
Accident occurred while giving way to car
According to preliminary information, the victim was walking along the roadside when the crane approached the stretch. The driver is said to have swerved the heavy vehicle to give way to an oncoming car. In the process, he reportedly lost safe clearance and struck the pedestrian.
Due to the size and weight of the vehicle, the man was trapped under one of the wheels of the crane. Bystanders rushed to help and alerted emergency services. The victim suffered severe crush injuries in the incident.
Local residents said the stretch witnesses frequent movement of heavy vehicles, increasing risk for pedestrians walking along the edge of the road.
Victim battling for life in hospital
The injured man was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital by locals with the help of emergency responders. Medical sources said he is in critical condition and battling for life due to the extent of injuries sustained in the run-over.
His identity had not been officially released at the time of reporting. Doctors are continuing emergency treatment and monitoring his condition.
CCTV footage to aid investigation
The crane driver reportedly did not stop after the accident and drove away from the spot, triggering allegations of hit-and-run. However, the entire sequence was recorded on CCTV cameras installed in the area, which police are expected to review as part of the investigation.
Footage is likely to help identify the vehicle, confirm the sequence of events, and trace the driver involved. Investigators are also expected to check nearby establishments and traffic cameras to map the crane’s movement before and after the crash.
Case likely against driver
Police sources indicated that a case will be registered against the crane driver for rash and negligent driving and for fleeing the scene after causing a serious accident. Notices may also be issued to the vehicle owner or contracting firm depending on registration details.
Authorities have urged heavy vehicle drivers to exercise extra caution in mixed-traffic and pedestrian zones, especially when manoeuvring to give way on narrow stretches.
Further updates are awaited as police proceed with identification and legal action.
