In a united effort to preserve and promote the Tulu language, the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Akhila Bharata Tulu Okkuta have announced a joint campaign to increase the teaching of Tulu as a third language in schools across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

The announcement was made following a strategic meeting between Okkuta President A C Bhandari and Academy President Taranath Gatti Kapikad at the Academy’s office. The organisations said the initiative aims not only to boost student enrolment in Tulu courses but also to increase the number of schools offering the language.

As part of the campaign, both bodies plan to engage with Tulu-speaking communities across India and abroad. The goal is to collectively design a roadmap for integrating Tulu more effectively into the school curriculum and to ensure the language’s long-term preservation through education.

The collaboration also intends to mobilise cultural and linguistic organisations to support awareness efforts, training modules for teachers, and curriculum development.

Leaders from both organisations stressed the cultural significance of Tulu and highlighted the urgent need to revive it among younger generations.

Details about the rollout plan, engagement with education departments, and institutional support are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
