Udupi is witnessing a troubling increase in vehicles driving in the wrong direction, prompting urgent calls for stricter enforcement from the police. Despite the installation of cautionary signboards, many motorists continue to violate traffic norms, especially in areas lacking a strong police presence. This has caused confusion among law-abiding drivers, particularly on roads where violations go unchecked.
One of the most problematic stretches is the four-lane road connecting Kalsanka to Ambagilu, where unauthorised vendors have occupied nearly 2 km of the left side, making traffic flow nearly impossible. In front of D-Mart, the situation worsens as vehicles drive on the wrong side, suggesting a lack of accountability.
Accidents have become frequent, especially during night travel, as vehicles approach from opposite directions, creating hazardous confusion. With limited police patrolling in these areas, traffic violations continue to rise, leaving the public frustrated and concerned about their safety.
Key problem areas include:
-
Syndicate Circle to Lakshmindranagar (Manipal)
Sharada Kalyana Mantap to Kunjibettu highway
Badagupete to Kalsanka road
Shiribeedu Circle
Bannanje and Mathadabettu areas
Udupi fish market to Diana Circle
Mission Compound to Jodukatte
Ajjarkad town hall and surrounding areas
Dr K Arun, Superintendent of Police, stated that accident-prone zones have been identified, and reports are being compiled for further action to curb wrong-side driving.
