Udupi: A sudden storm swept through Udupi district, bringing with it intense gusty winds and heavy rain that disrupted daily life and caused significant property damage across multiple regions.
The fierce winds raised dust clouds, reducing visibility and halting traffic in several places. In many areas, roofing sheets were seen flying, causing panic among the public. The storm impacted localities including Karkala, Manipal, Hiriyadka, Udupi town, and Brahmavar, where electricity supply was cut off due to fallen poles and snapped wires.
A devastating incident near Koppala at Indira Serigarthi left a house badly damaged as cement sheets and electric poles were torn apart. The estimated loss from this incident alone is pegged at ₹3 lakh.
In Moodubettu, a fallen tree wrecked three houses, while in Kadiyali, a large Ashwatha tree crashed onto a house, seriously injuring the couple—Raghavendra Bhat and Neeraja—and completely destroying their home.
Responding swiftly, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna and Congress leader Prasad Raj Kanchan visited the impacted sites. The MLA directed authorities to provide immediate aid and adequate compensation to affected families, along with temporary housing solutions.
In the heart of the city, several flex hoardings, banners, and poles were uprooted by the strong winds, notably in Manipal and near the bus stand.
