Udupi: In a crackdown on illegal activities, Hebri police apprehended three individuals involved in cannabis use and operating a cricket betting network.

The accused — identified as Tejas, Prajwal, and Praveen — were taken into custody on the morning of May 19 from Tumbejaddu village in Java Bellanje. Authorities acted on a tip-off and conducted a swift operation resulting in their arrest.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the trio was engaged in both the peddling of ganja and coordinating bets on ongoing cricket matches. Police found them in possession of 21 grams of cannabis, confirming their role in drug-related offenses.

During the raid, law enforcement officials also confiscated ₹89,000 in cash, suspected to be proceeds from betting and drug sales. In addition, eight mobile phones, seven ATM cards, three SIM cards, and two notebooks containing records of transactions were seized as evidence.

The detailed records are believed to provide crucial insights into the extent of their betting operations and client network. The seized digital devices will undergo forensic analysis to trace further links.

Hebri police have formally registered a case and are continuing their investigation to uncover other individuals who may be involved in the racket. Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against those participating in such illegal ventures.

The arrest is part of a larger initiative to curb substance abuse and unlawful betting practices in the region.
