Udupi: Continuous heavy downpours over the past two days have triggered concerns of flooding in multiple parts of Udupi district. Several low-lying localities are under watch as water levels continue to rise.
Areas such as Gundibailu, Bailakere, Mudanidambur, Bannanje, Pitrodi, Kadekar, and Bolje within Udupi city are at risk of artificial flooding. Streets in several zones are submerged, leading to traffic disruptions and slowing down vehicle movement.
With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting continued intense rainfall across the region, a red alert has been issued. The public has been urged to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in waterlogged areas.
As a precautionary step, schools across the district were closed on Thursday. However, degree colleges remain open, as semester exams are underway, prompting students to brave the rain to appear for their tests. Meanwhile, PU colleges have resumed classes and were not granted a holiday, as the new academic year has just begun.
The IMD has indicated that showers will persist for another 2 to 3 days, increasing the chance of urban flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage infrastructure.
Residents are advised to stay alert, follow weather updates, and avoid venturing near rivers, lakes, or flooded roads during the ongoing red alert period.
