Parking woes and traffic signal management took center stage at the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) general body meeting on November 22, chaired by CMC President Prabhakar Poojary. The meeting, attended by councillors and officials, tackled several pressing issues impacting the city.
MLA Yashpal Suvarna highlighted parking problems, particularly in Manipal and near the Udupi bus stand. He proposed dedicated parking zones, hourly charges for prolonged parking, and hospital visitors utilizing designated hospital parking areas to ease congestion. Suvarna also called for revising unscientific traffic signal timings and evaluating the legality of auto stands.
DSP Prabhu D T emphasized that increasing vehicle numbers and narrow roads exacerbate traffic challenges. He endorsed installing traffic signals and CCTV surveillance to manage congestion and enhance safety.
Councillor Amrutha Krishnamoorthi raised concerns about water scarcity as the monsoon ends. She also criticized the lack of communication regarding footpath excavation under the Varahi project, which poses safety risks.
Animal welfare was another focal point. Councillors highlighted the rising stray dog population and limited veterinary facilities. Deputy Director Dr. Reddappa acknowledged the absence of an Animal Birth Control (ABC) center in Udupi despite sanctioned funds, underscoring staff shortages.
The discussion extended to Babbu Swami Layout’s poor infrastructure, water supply issues, and unusable roads. Proposals for a water storage tank and layout improvements were put forward.
The meeting also addressed delays in food license issuance and the need for more veterinary resources to aid injured cows. Vice President Rajani Hebbar, Commissioner Udaya Shetty, and other officials participated in the discussions.
