In a heartbreaking turn of events, a crew member working on the much-awaited Kannada film Kantara 2 drowned in the Souparnika River near Kollur, Udupi district, on May 6, sending shockwaves through the film industry and local community.

The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Kabeel from Kottayam, Kerala. He had reportedly gone for a swim with two colleagues after wrapping up the day’s shoot when he was suddenly swept away by strong undercurrents.

Despite immediate rescue efforts by police and local volunteers, Kabeel could not be saved. Authorities have initiated a formal investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Kantara 2, helmed by acclaimed director Rishab Shetty and backed by producer Vijay Kiragandur, is currently being shot in the scenic but perilous coastal region of Karnataka. The tragedy has left the entire film unit shaken and mourning the loss of a valued team member.

The Souparnika River, while popular for its natural beauty, has a history of treacherous undercurrents, especially during the pre-monsoon months. Locals and safety experts have previously cautioned visitors about the hidden dangers beneath its calm appearance.

The incident underscores the critical importance of safety awareness when working or relaxing near natural water bodies, particularly in unpredictable seasonal conditions.

Kantara 2 is slated for release in October 2025.
