Udupi: The Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association, in collaboration with the Udupi Patrika Bhavan Committee, organized a heartfelt tribute meeting at Patrika Bhavan, Udupi, on Tuesday to honor the memory of the late senior journalist Manjunath Bhat.
Remembering Bhat, senior journalist Kumaraswamy said that he grew up amidst struggles but nurtured a deep love for literature from his student days by engaging with senior writers. “As a deputy editor, he crafted reports as if he were an invisible observer, ensuring the story itself stood out rather than his name. His ability to produce impactful news without seeking recognition reflected his selfless service to journalism,” he remarked.
Senior journalist B.B. Shettigar recalled Bhat’s humility and dedication, noting that his umbrella and bag were his constant companions. “He was the perfect example of what a sub-editor should be. His eagerness to sit at the desk, edit with precision, and receive reports gave every story more depth. He would quietly attend programmes, blend into the crowd, and yet produce lengthy, detailed, and well-written reports,” Shettigar added, reminiscing about their time together at Mungaru and Kannada Jana Antaranga newspapers.
On the occasion, Udupi Information Officer Manjunath, District Working Journalists Association President Rajesh Shetty Alevoor, and journalist Raju Kharvi also spoke, recalling Bhat’s invaluable contribution to the media world.
The event was attended by General Secretary Nazir Polya, Treasurer Umesh Marpalli, and several others. Secretary Rahim Ujire extended the welcome and compered the programme.
