Udupi: Condemning the recent incident where CET aspirants were allegedly forced to remove their sacred thread (Janivara), the Udupi unit of the BJP staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Joined by members from various religious organizations, the protest included speeches by community leaders emphasizing the cultural and spiritual importance of the Janivara. Brahmin representatives passionately voiced concerns over the violation of religious freedom.
A formal memorandum was handed over to Deputy Commissioner Dr. K. Vidyakumari, urging immediate action to safeguard traditional religious customs. She assured the delegation that their concerns would be relayed to the state authorities.
Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna took a strong stance, accusing the current state leadership of favoring a single religion while neglecting Hindu sentiments. “This sacred thread is a symbol of spiritual rebirth and discipline,” he remarked. “This protest is not just a demonstration—it’s a warning to those undermining our heritage.”
Religious leader Herga Hariprasad Bhat called the act a direct attack on Hindu identity. “The Janivara signifies more than a thread—it reflects a lifestyle of devotion and self-discipline,” he said. He criticized the government for its silence.
Chempi Ramachandra Bhat expressed heartfelt anguish over the trauma faced by the student. Sagri Anand Theertha, despite a health issue, broke his silence to stress the need for youth involvement in preserving faith-based practices.
The protest saw participation from BJP leaders and prominent spiritual voices from the region.
