Udupi – Women and Child Development Minister and Udupi district in-charge Lakshmi Hebbalkar emphasized the need for robust preparedness and quick action to safeguard both people and animals from the risks of heavy rainfall and flooding.
During a virtual review meeting with Udupi district officials, the minister noted that pre-monsoon rainfall has exceeded normal levels by a wide margin. While the expected average since January was 177.4 mm, the district has recorded 801.7 mm, nearly threefold the usual amount.
She urged all departments to stay fully equipped and ready f0or the monsoon season, stressing that essential tools and infrastructure must be in place to handle emergencies. She instructed that district and taluk-level control rooms must function 24/7, responding swiftly to rain-related complaints and providing timely relief to affected families.
The minister highlighted the need to closely track water levels and inflow at the Varahi dam, adding that the public must be alerted in advance in case of any danger. With increased rainfall supporting agriculture, she directed officials to ensure efficient distribution of seeds and fertilizers to farmers without administrative delays.
Expressing concern over the safety of tourists, she asked for caution boards to be set up near water bodies like beaches and waterfalls, and for staff to be deployed where feasible.
Referencing the recent unrest in Dakshina Kannada, Hebbalkar called for measures to uphold law and order, particularly in border areas.
District secretary Satyavati G instructed staff to remain centrally positioned and ensure round-the-clock phone availability for quick response.
