Udupi: In a proactive step to address monsoon-related challenges, the Udupi City Municipality (CMC) has decided to hire 40 additional sanitation workers on an outsourced basis. The move is aimed at expediting pre-monsoon desilting work and ensuring swift response to emergencies during the rainy season.

With drains and canals across the city currently clogged with silt and waste, officials have prioritised cleaning operations ahead of the monsoon. The additional workforce is expected to significantly boost the municipality’s capacity to handle the increased workload.

Addressing workforce shortage

Officials highlighted that the existing number of pourakarmikas is insufficient to manage both routine sanitation duties and seasonal demands. Out of 193 sanctioned posts, only 106 are currently filled, leading to operational strain on civic services.

To bridge this gap, the municipality has opted for short-term outsourcing. The recruitment process for the additional workers is expected to be completed within the next 15 days, with appointments valid for a period of four months.

This temporary arrangement is intended to ensure uninterrupted sanitation services and quick response to emergencies such as waterlogging and blocked drains during heavy rains.

Extensive drain network under focus

The city has an extensive network of storm-water drains spanning approximately 118 km. Of this, about 64 km has already been cleared as part of ongoing desilting operations.

Work on the remaining 54 km is pending and will be fast-tracked with the induction of the new workers. Officials stressed that timely completion of these works is critical to prevent flooding and minimise disruptions during the monsoon.

The cleaning process involves removal of silt, plastic waste and debris that obstruct water flow, a recurring issue in urban areas during heavy rainfall.

Safety measures and equipment

The municipality has also outlined safety measures for the newly recruited workers. Each worker will receive a monthly salary of Rs 20,131 and will be provided with essential protective gear.

This includes helmets, gumboots, gloves, raincoats and radium jackets to ensure visibility and safety during hazardous operations. Workers will also be equipped with necessary tools such as pickaxes, machetes and plastic baskets to carry out desilting and cleaning tasks effectively.

Officials emphasised that ensuring worker safety is a priority, especially during the monsoon when conditions can be unpredictable and risky.

Emergency preparedness and helpline

The additional workforce is being deployed specifically for a four-month period to handle monsoon exigencies. Authorities have assured that the municipality is well-prepared to respond to public grievances and emergencies arising from heavy rainfall.

To facilitate quick response, a dedicated helpline has been made available for citizens. Residents can report rain-related incidents or seek assistance by contacting 0820-2520306.

The municipality has urged the public to cooperate with sanitation workers and avoid dumping waste into drains, which contributes significantly to blockages.

Conclusion

The decision by Udupi City Municipality to hire additional sanitation workers reflects a focused approach towards monsoon preparedness. By addressing workforce shortages and accelerating desilting efforts, the civic body aims to minimise the impact of heavy rains and ensure smoother urban functioning. Continued public cooperation and timely execution of these measures will be key to achieving effective results.
