The Udupi City National Highway Agitation Committee has issued a final ultimatum to authorities, demanding the completion of the Indrali bridge by end of May, or they will gherao MP Kota Srinivas Poojary’s office.
Addressing a press conference, committee convener Amruth Shenoy criticized the prolonged delays and irregularities in the bridge construction. “Public pressure has brought attention to this issue. The MP is now involved, and progress is being monitored. But we need accountability,” he said.
Shenoy clarified that the committee’s deadline is based on the MP’s own assurance. “Children returning to school in June should not face safety hazards,” he stressed. He added that if the deadline isn’t met, they will demand an apology and explanation from the officials involved.
In a symbolic act of protest, Shenoy shaved his head. Dismissing BJP’s accusations of politicization, he stated, “Many supporters aren’t even affiliated with Congress. I challenge BJP district president Kishore Kumar to shave his head if the work isn’t done in two months.”
Shenoy also flagged the hazardous road conditions in Santhekatte and promised to submit a memorandum to the district authorities. He criticized the lack of action on the Parkala issue, pledging to lead the initiative.
Block Congress president Ramesh Kanchan echoed these concerns, slamming elected officials for neglecting infrastructure in areas like Malpe, Kallianpur, and Ambalpady, and called for accountability over national highway delays.
