Udupi– Consumers in Udupi are raising serious concerns over increasing frauds linked to set-top box replacements, especially under the pretense of “free” offers by cable operators.
In the past few years, cable operators have been repeatedly changing set-top boxes every two years, forcing customers to adapt to unnecessary upgrades. Sources allege that some senior cable operator officials are coercing local operators to push these changes purely for personal profit.
A Gujarat-based company recently launched a promotional offer in Udupi promising free set-top boxes along with three months of subscription, but several users have reported that local cable operators are withholding the promised benefits and continuing to charge regular fees.
This recurring change has caused hardship for elderly residents and rural subscribers, who are struggling with the technical issues and poor customer service. Channel quality and number have also degraded, with complaints of forced installations, even when customers declined the offer.
Moreover, many consumers claim they faced misbehavior from operators when they asked for the free benefits. This has sparked growing demand for intervention from consumer protection and broadcasting authorities, urging strict action against unethical practices.
