Udupi DC Urges NHAI to Address Highway Maintenance Issues Promptly
Udupi Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday to ensure regular maintenance of NH66, emphasizing the need to resolve issues without causing complaints. Speaking at a review meeting held at Rajatadri, the district office complex in Manipal, Ms. Vidyakumari highlighted that if NHAI and its concessionaires promptly address concerns like potholes and road damage, public complaints to the administration would decrease. She stressed that the administration should not be bogged down by routine issues, allowing them to focus on more pressing matters.
Ms. Vidyakumari pointed out that tolls are paid by commuters to drive on the highway, making it the NHAI’s responsibility to maintain the road in good condition. Following the monsoon, there have been numerous complaints about potholes and craters along the highway, as well as faulty or absent streetlights in several stretches.
She urged the NHAI and its concessionaire to collaborate efficiently and resolve issues raised by the public. The DC also encouraged the use of the Rajmargyatra app, developed by NHAI, to register complaints. Additionally, she addressed concerns from Brahmavar residents, who have requested the construction of a service road, the opening of the median, and the creation of a flyover. These demands will be considered on priority, and a decision regarding the median will be made after a road safety committee inspection.
Other issues discussed in the meeting included vegetation clearing on the highway, road shoulder maintenance, and pedestrian path upkeep. NHAI officials, Superintendent of Police K. Arun, and other participants were present at the meeting.
