Udupi: In view of the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving Iran and its neighbouring nations, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India has called upon the Christian community across the country to fervently pray for peace.

Responding to this appeal, the apostolic administrator of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Udupi, Gerald Isaac Lobo, has urged the faithful to observe Sunday, March 8, as a Day of Prayer for Peace.

Concern over human suffering caused by conflict

In a press release issued by Denis D’Sa, public relations officer of the diocese, the Church expressed deep concern over the immense human suffering caused by war and instability in various parts of the world.

The statement noted that conflicts and violence inflict severe pain on communities and affect the well-being of the entire human family. The Church has therefore called on believers to unite in prayer and spiritual solidarity for peace.

Particular concern has also been expressed for Indians living and working in countries across the Middle East, where many members of the coastal Karnataka community are employed.

Special prayers for Indians in the Middle East

According to the press release, thousands of Indians residing in Gulf and Middle Eastern nations support their families back home and make valuable contributions to both the Church and the country.

In light of the present uncertainty, the faithful have been urged to entrust these individuals and their families to God’s protection, praying for their safety, security and well-being.

The diocese emphasised that the prayers are meant to seek divine guidance and protection for all those affected by conflict and instability in the region.

Special prayers during Holy Mass

On March 8, special prayers for peace in the Middle East will be offered during the celebration of the Holy Mass in all parishes and institutions under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Udupi.

Church authorities have suggested that suitable intentions be included in the Prayer of the Faithful, invoking an end to violence, protection of innocent lives and wisdom among world leaders to resolve disputes peacefully.

The faithful will also pray for reconciliation and harmony among nations affected by conflict.

Rosary prayers and fasting for peace

In addition to the special prayers during Mass, members of the Church have been encouraged to recite the Holy Rosary daily from March 8 to March 14 with the specific intention of praying for peace.

Friday, March 13, has also been designated as a Day of Fasting and Prayer, during which believers are invited to make personal sacrifices and offer prayers for world peace and for the safety of those affected by violence.

Church leaders said such acts of prayer and penance are expressions of solidarity with those who are suffering due to conflict.

Call for unity and reconciliation

The diocese has urged the faithful to participate actively in the prayer initiative, emphasising that collective prayer can help foster a spirit of peace and compassion.

The statement concluded by calling on believers to humbly implore Almighty God so that hatred may give way to reconciliation, hostilities may cease and the gift of peace may flourish across the world.

Conclusion

The initiative reflects the Church’s concern for global peace and the welfare of communities affected by conflict. Through prayer, fasting and spiritual solidarity, the faithful are encouraged to seek peace and protection for people living in conflict-affected regions.
