Udupi: A grand celebration unfolded at Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur, on Sunday to mark the 75th birthday of Most Rev Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of the Udupi Diocese, alongside his Silver Jubilee—25 years of episcopal ordination.
The event was honored by the presence of Most Rev Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, making his first official visit to the Udupi Diocese. Bishop Lobo, along with Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves, Vicar General of Udupi Diocese, and Fr Roshan D’Souza, Chancellor of the Diocese, warmly welcomed the Nuncio, alongside various clergy and lay leaders.
The celebrations began with a thanksgiving mass, led by Bishop Lobo and attended by a large gathering of bishops, priests, and faithful parishioners. Most Rev Francis Serrao, Bishop of Shimoga, delivered the homily, commending Bishop Lobo for his unwavering leadership and Christ-centered service.
“It is not just about celebrating two milestones; it is about honoring 75 years of faith and 25 years of devoted pastoral service,” he remarked.
Following the mass, a public felicitation ceremony was held. Apostolic Nuncio Girelli praised Bishop Lobo’s service-oriented leadership, calling him an inspiration for dioceses across India. Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore also lauded the bishop’s deep connection with his people.
In his acceptance speech, Bishop Lobo expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who had supported him throughout his spiritual journey.
The event saw the participation of several distinguished bishops, including Retired Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore, Retired Bishop Albert D’Souza of Agra, and others from across India. Msgr Ferdinand Gonsalves conducted the program, with significant contributions from Pritesh D’Sa and Jenisha Kemmannu of the Diocesan Financial Committee.
