The Diocese of Udupi witnessed a monumental moment of spiritual renewal on May 2nd, as two Deacons, Rohan Edward Mascarenhas and Oswald Vas, were ordained into the Sacred Priesthood. The solemn ordination ceremony took place at the revered St. Lawrence Minor Basilica in Attur Karkala, drawing a large crowd of clergy, religious figures, and well-wishers from within and beyond the diocese.

Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo of Udupi led the sacred ceremony, with a sense of reverence filling the air as the community gathered to witness these young men dedicate their lives to service. Fr. Rohan Edward Mascarenhas, from Kelmbet, Bola, and Fr. Oswald Vas, from Hirgana Mary Goretti Church, were supported by their families, who were deeply moved by the momentous event.

During his homily, Bishop Lobo emphasized the profound calling of the priesthood, describing the priest as a shepherd to God’s people, entrusted with living out promises of obedience and celibacy. He urged families to encourage more young people to consider the vocation, highlighting the important role they play in shaping spiritual leaders.

The Rite of Ordination was marked by significant rituals, including the laying on of hands, the anointing of hands with sacred chrism, and the reception of the chalice and paten. The ceremony culminated in the Kiss of Peace from the Bishop and a celebratory Holy Eucharist, where the newly ordained priests concelebrated alongside the Bishop.

The event was attended by prominent clergy, religious sisters, and a large congregation, making it a moment of joy and thanksgiving for the Diocese of Udupi.
