Udupi: A deeply emotional tragedy unfolded in Gundmi near Sasthan, Kundapur, where an elderly couple passed away within hours of each other.
The deceased have been identified as 84-year-old J. Ratnakaraya, a retired senior health inspector, and his 72-year-old wife, Sarojamma. On Thursday morning, Sarojamma suffered a sudden cardiac arrest at home and collapsed. Despite efforts by family members, she could not be revived and was declared dead on the spot.
Her husband Ratnakaraya, who was beside her during the incident, experienced a sharp decline in his own health shortly afterward. Witnessing his wife’s passing appeared to have taken a heavy emotional toll on him. He was swiftly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Despite the immediate efforts of doctors to stabilize his condition, Ratnakaraya succumbed approximately four hours later. The couple’s deaths, occurring within such a short span, have left the local community in shock and mourning.
The late couple is survived by their son and daughter, who are now coming to terms with the double loss. Neighbours and acquaintances described them as a devoted pair who spent their lives in service and harmony.
The incident highlights the deep emotional bonds shared by longtime partners and the profound impact such losses can have on one’s health—especially in older age.
Funeral arrangements are underway as friends and family gather to pay their respects.
