Udupi: The temple town of Udupi has been decked up in festive splendour as preparations for the grand Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations reached their peak on Friday. Colourful decorations, cultural programmes, children’s competitions, tableaux and Huli Vesha troupes have added to the festive atmosphere ahead of the main celebrations.

The celebrations at the historic Sri Krishna Math will culminate with the traditional Arghya Pradhana in the early hours of Saturday, September 5. A large number of devotees have already arrived in the temple town to witness the Ashtami and Sri Krishna Leelotsava celebrations.

With the festival coinciding with the weekend, Udupi is expected to witness a significant increase in visitors and devotees.

Sri Krishna Math adorned for celebrations

The Sri Krishna Math has been beautifully decorated with intricate floral arrangements, creating a vibrant and devotional ambience for the religious rituals and cultural programmes.

The festive spirit was visible across the town, with children dressed as Lord Krishna adding colour to the celebrations. Various competitions and programmes for children were organised at the Sri Krishna Math and other venues.

The celebrations have brought together devotees, families, cultural groups and performers as the temple town prepares for one of its most important annual festivals.

Mahapuja scheduled at midnight

Paryaya Sri Shiroor Math seer Sri Sri Vedhavardhana Theertha Sripada will perform the Mahapuja at 12.15 am on Saturday.

Following the Mahapuja, the seer will initiate the preparation of ladoos, which will be offered as naivedya during the night Mahapuja.

The midnight rituals are among the most significant religious observances associated with Janmashtami, marking the traditional celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth.

Devotees are expected to gather in large numbers to witness the rituals and seek blessings at the Krishna Math.

Sri Krishna Leelotsava to add colour

The celebrations will continue on Saturday with the grand Sri Krishna Leelotsava, popularly known as Vittal Pindi.

The event is among the most eagerly awaited traditions of Udupi’s Janmashtami celebrations. The entire city is expected to witness a surge of devotees as Huli Vesha troupes, tableaux and cultural performers converge for the festivities.

People dressed in colourful costumes will participate in traditional performances, with tiger dance and wrestling displays among the major attractions.

The combination of religious rituals and folk traditions gives Vittal Pindi its distinctive character and makes it a major cultural event in Udupi.

Annasantarpane for devotees

As part of the Vittal Pindi celebrations, Annasantarpane will begin at 10 am on Saturday for devotees.

At 3 pm, a procession carrying the clay idol of Lord Krishna in a golden chariot will be held along Car Street, also known as Rathabeedi.

The procession is expected to attract large crowds as devotees gather along the traditional route to participate in the celebrations.

Traditional pot-breaking ceremony

A key part of the traditional Vittal Pindi celebrations is the breaking of curd-filled pots placed on Gurjis by cowherds.

The ceremony recreates the playful childhood traditions associated with Lord Krishna and his fondness for butter and curd.

The Paryaya Sripada will distribute chakli and unde prasada among devotees during the celebrations.

Krishna idol to be immersed in Madhwa Sarovara

Following the traditional celebrations, the clay idol of Lord Krishna will be immersed in Madhwa Sarovara, marking the conclusion of the religious festivities.

The immersion forms an important part of the traditional observance and brings the main rituals associated with Vittal Pindi to an end.

Alongside the religious ceremonies, the city will also witness a range of cultural performances. Participants in colourful costumes will perform traditional arts, including the popular tiger dance, while wrestling displays will add to the spectacle.

Devotees arrive in large numbers

A large number of devotees have already reached Udupi ahead of the Ashtami and Vittal Pindi celebrations.

The weekend timing is expected to further increase the number of visitors to the temple town. Hotels, roads and public spaces are likely to see increased activity as devotees arrive from different parts of Karnataka and neighbouring regions.

The combination of the Janmashtami rituals, the historic significance of Sri Krishna Math and the colourful Vittal Pindi celebrations makes the festival one of the biggest annual gatherings in Udupi.

Tight security arrangements

In view of the expected crowds, security has been strengthened across Udupi city.

Additional police personnel have been deployed to monitor the movement of devotees and ensure the smooth conduct of religious and cultural programmes.

The security deployment includes one Superintendent of Police, one Additional SP, two DySPs, six PIs, 25 PSIs and 35 ASIs, along with 186 head constables, police constables and women police personnel.

Around 50 home guards have also been deployed as part of the arrangements.

KSRP, DAR and drone teams deployed

For additional security, the police department has deployed one KSRP platoon and nine DAR platoons.

Three fire and emergency response teams have also been positioned to deal with any emergency situation. In addition, two ambulances have been kept ready.

The police have deployed three drone teams for aerial monitoring of crowded areas and to assist in maintaining security during the celebrations.

The extensive deployment is aimed at ensuring the safety of devotees and facilitating the orderly movement of crowds during the major programmes.

Udupi ready for grand celebration

With religious rituals, cultural programmes, traditional performances and colourful processions scheduled across the town, Udupi is ready for a grand celebration of Sri Krishna Janmashtami.

The midnight Mahapuja at Sri Krishna Math will mark the spiritual high point of the celebrations, while Saturday’s Vittal Pindi will bring together devotees, cultural performers and traditional Huli Vesha troupes.

With thousands expected to gather, the strengthened security arrangements and coordinated preparations are aimed at ensuring that devotees can participate safely in the celebrations.
