A 41-year-old man from Udupi lost ₹2,32,060 over two months after being deceived by a cyber fraudster who offered him a lucrative job abroad.
According to the complaint filed at the CEN station, the victim, Umesh, had inquired about job opportunities through a friend. The friend shared a WhatsApp list containing job details and contact numbers. Upon calling one of the numbers, Umesh was assured of a well-paying job overseas.
Subsequently, he received repeated calls from the same number, convincing him to make payments. Trusting the fraudsters, he transferred ₹2,32,060 in installments between February 18 and March 20.
On March 20, Umesh traveled to Mumbai expecting to fly abroad. However, when he tried to contact the individuals who had promised him the job, their phones were switched off. Realizing he had been scammed, he filed a complaint.
A case has been registered under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act and Section 318(4) of the BNS.
