Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi announced that 300 footbridges will be constructed across 12 districts in phases, with all necessary projects in Udupi district set for completion within three years.

Speaking at a PWD progress review meeting on Monday, he stated that a proposal for 413 new footbridges, costing ₹51.7 crore, had been submitted. An initial grant of ₹30 crore has been released, and the remaining funds will be allocated gradually. Currently, 200 footbridges are under construction, with an additional 300 planned next year, pending budgetary approval in March.

Addressing concerns over construction costs, Jarkiholi defended the PWD’s approach, stating that all projects adhere to the department’s Schedule of Rates (SR) manual. He emphasized that infrastructure development, including footbridges and bridge repairs, remains a priority. He also confirmed that pothole-filling work in most parts of Udupi district has been completed, with remaining areas being addressed.

Additionally, the minister announced plans for a 20-room inspection bungalow in Udupi. Responding to BJP MLAs’ claims of insufficient government funds for development, he asserted that significant progress has been made, even if every demand hasn’t been met.
