Udupi – In a significant breakthrough in the tragic case involving a newborn baby found dead in a mosque restroom near Malpe Junction, the Udupi district police have successfully identified the infant’s mother.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Arun K addressed the media on Wednesday, sharing detailed insights into the ongoing investigation.

“Upon receiving a report about the discovery of an infant’s body within mosque premises, we promptly launched a probe. Our investigation has revealed that the mother is Afreena, a resident of Udupi, who is of legal age,” the SP informed.

According to the SP, Afreena submitted a written statement, admitting that she attempted to medically terminate her 7–8-month pregnancy without following any legal medical procedures. During the process, she experienced intense labour pain, and in a state of distress, left the baby in the mosque washroom. She is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital, and further questioning will take place once she recovers.

The SP also issued a strong caution against the spread of fake news related to the case on social media. “We have observed a surge in unverified and misleading posts. We request the public to refrain from circulating false content, as strict legal action will be taken against individuals responsible for spreading misinformation,” he said.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain sensitive and responsible, especially in emotionally charged cases involving human lives.
