Udupi SP Clarifies Karkala Incident: Not a Gang Rape
Udupi, EXPRESS News: Udupi SP Dr. Arun K has issued a stern warning against misinformation regarding the recent rape incident in Karkala, clarifying that it is not a gang rape. The clarification follows misleading claims by political figures, including BJP leaders V Sunil Kumar and MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, who described the incident as gang rape and even framed it as ‘love jihad’.
SP Dr. Arun K emphasized that the preliminary investigation reveals the assault involved only one accused, Altaf. The victim, currently in shock, will provide detailed statements as the investigation progresses. Dr. Arun K highlighted that initial medical reports do not indicate a gang rape, and further examination will offer more clarity.
MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta condemned the incident as a reflection of deteriorating law and order, linking it to drug trafficking and criticizing the Congress government. Similarly, MLA V Sunil Kumar termed the incident as ‘love jihad,’ despite evidence showing only two arrests related to the case.
In response, local Muslim leader Mohammed Sharif demanded severe punishment for the accused and criticized the police’s handling of drug-related issues. The Hindu Hitharakshana Samithi plans to stage a protest on August 26 to denounce the crime.
