Udupi: The process to upgrade Malpe’s all-season fishing harbour has commenced with an extensive survey, set to conclude by October. This significant project aims to modernise the harbour by addressing critical aspects such as port security, sanitation, traffic management, and technological advancements.

A team of specialists from various fields is spearheading the survey and master planning. This includes representatives from the Coast Guard Police Force, local fishermen, the Port Engineering Department, the Fire Brigade, and academic institutions. The comprehensive plan is designed to serve the harbour’s needs for the next 100 to 150 years, focusing on creating a safe and efficient environment for fishing activities.

The master plan for the harbour upgrade includes:

  • Enhanced port security and sanitation measures.
  • Improved traffic system management.
  • Integration of modern technology.
  • Development of multi-level parking facilities.
  • Establishment of ATM and smoking zones.
  • Construction of a health center.
  • Installation of biometric systems for better security and management.
  • Implementation of a tag installation process for boats to ensure streamlined operations.

The Malpe Fishermen’s Association has voiced a need for an outer fishing harbour, alongside a proposal for a sea ambulance service. In response, the new project incorporates several additional features, including:

  • A floating fire service to enhance safety.
  • A dedicated sea ambulance.
  • A slipway for boat maintenance.
  • Separate berths designed for different types of boats.

The expansion plan also covers a significant area, with the Malpe fishing port itself spanning 114 acres. An additional 1,200 acres of land and nearby islands are under consideration for further development.

The detailed plan is scheduled for submission to the Coast Guard by October. Following this, a meeting with the District Commissioner (DC) will be convened to discuss the project details, including costs. The finalized proposal will then be forwarded to the state government for approval.

The implementation of this project is expected to take place over the next decade, with ongoing contributions from students and experts utilizing modern technologies to shape various facets of the plan.

This upgrade marks a pivotal step in enhancing Malpe’s fishing harbour, promising improved infrastructure and facilities to support the local fishing industry for generations to come.
