Udupi: A solitary wild elephant has been spotted wandering near residential areas in Siddapura, Hosangadi, and surrounding villages, causing fear and anxiety among locals. The elephant was first seen near a house in the Balebar Ghat region yesterday, and since then, it has been moving around the Siddhapura area.

Residents were alarmed when the elephant ventured close to human settlements, with several reporting sightings near homes and agricultural fields. Villagers are on edge, fearing possible damage to life and property.

As a safety precaution, the local administration has announced a temporary closure of Anganwadi centres and schools in Siddhapura and nearby areas. Officials stated that the decision was made to ensure the safety of children and school staff while forest teams track the animal.

Forest department personnel have been alerted, and efforts are underway to monitor the elephant’s movements. However, locals are growing increasingly restless and have demanded that the authorities capture and relocate the animal to a forested zone far from human habitation.

“This has become a serious concern for us. Children and the elderly are scared to step out,” said a resident. The villagers have appealed for immediate intervention from wildlife officials to avoid any untoward incident.

Wildlife experts suggest the elephant may have strayed from its herd in search of food or water, a common occurrence during the dry season.
