Brahmavar (Udupi): A disturbing case of violence shook Kokkarne village in Brahmavar taluk on Thursday morning when a young woman was brutally stabbed by her neighbour for allegedly refusing his marriage proposal.
The victim, identified as Rakshita, aged between 20 and 24 years and a resident of Poojaribettu, Kokkarne, was attacked while on her way to work in Manipal. She was intercepted on the road by Karthik Poojary, who allegedly assaulted her with a knife.
Attack linked to rejected proposal
According to police, the incident appears to be linked to a personal dispute. Investigations revealed that Rakshita had rejected Karthik’s marriage proposal, leading to tension between the two. Reports suggest she had also blocked his phone number two weeks earlier after her family opposed the relationship.
On Thursday, coinciding with Rakshita’s birthday, the accused allegedly launched the assault, inflicting multiple stab wounds, including injuries to her neck and both sides of the rib area near the chest.
Victim’s condition critical
Initial reports mistakenly claimed that Rakshita had died on the spot. However, Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar later clarified that she survived the attack but sustained severe injuries. She was rushed to Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Hospital in Manipal, where she remains in a critical condition and is undergoing intensive treatment.
Police action and investigation
The Brahmavar police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar confirmed the incident and assured that strict legal action will follow once the inquiry is complete.
Police sources indicated that the assault was premeditated, as the accused followed the victim on his bike before carrying out the attack. Efforts are underway to ascertain whether he acted alone or with external influence.
Community in shock
The incident has left Kokkarne residents deeply shocked, with many calling it a grim reminder of the dangers faced by women when personal disputes escalate to violence. Local leaders have condemned the assault and urged authorities to ensure swift justice.
Conclusion
As Rakshita continues to fight for her life, the case highlights once again the urgent need for stronger awareness and preventive measures around crimes against women. Authorities are expected to strengthen surveillance and community outreach in sensitive areas.
