Udupi: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna expressed strong outrage, alleging that the state government is attempting to cover up its failures by restricting media access inside Vidhana Soudha, the seat of power in Karnataka.
In a statement issued to the press, Suvarna claimed that curbing the media, often described as the fourth pillar of democracy, was an attempt by the Siddaramaiah-led government to hide its administrative shortcomings. He alleged that the move undermines transparency and accountability in governance.
Allegations of instability and confusion
The MLA further stated that the governance system in the state had “completely collapsed” amid speculation over a possible change in the Chief Minister’s position. Referring to reports of MLAs undertaking foreign trips allegedly against party high command directions, he claimed that the government was facing internal instability.
According to him, instead of addressing pressing public issues and clarifying its position, the government was allegedly trying to divert attention by limiting media presence within the Assembly premises. He termed the reported restrictions as a step that weakens democratic functioning.
Criticism of Chief Minister
Suvarna also targeted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, stating that a leader who frequently speaks about freedom of expression and constitutional values should not hesitate to face the media. He alleged that fear over accusations related to corruption, transfer rackets, scams and misconduct by certain ministers had led to the decision to restrict access.
Citing the proverb “a guilty conscience needs no accuser,” he claimed that the government had indirectly imposed an undeclared emergency-like situation on the media in the state. He argued that such measures were contrary to democratic principles and constitutional spirit.
Demand to withdraw decision
The Udupi MLA urged the state government to immediately withdraw what he described as restrictive measures and ensure free and fair access for journalists within the corridors of power. He emphasised that transparency in governance is essential in a democratic setup and that media access plays a crucial role in informing the public.
Suvarna maintained that attempts to control or limit the press would only raise further questions about the government’s intentions. He reiterated that the media must be allowed to function independently and without hindrance in order to uphold democratic values.
The state government has not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations at the time of reporting. The issue is expected to trigger further political debate in the coming days, with opposition leaders likely to intensify their criticism if restrictions remain in place.
