The Karwar division, renowned for its coastal and marine ecosystem initiatives, is set to open a rescue and rehabilitation centre for olive ridley sea turtles. Funded by the World Bank under the K Shore scheme, the Rs 4-crore centre will be constructed near Kodi Bhag’s tree park by December 2024. It will feature an interpretation and study centre focused on marine turtles, with a resident veterinarian to treat injured turtles.

The centre, aimed at conserving the endangered olive ridley turtles, will also enhance local tourism by showcasing marine life such as turtles and dolphins, which are frequently sighted. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about turtle conservation and other marine species, such as dolphins, sharks, and porpoises. The project marks a significant step forward in both conservation and eco-tourism for Karwar.
