Karwar : An investigation has revealed that public toilets at bus stands in Karwar district have transformed into “collection centres,” where contractors charge exorbitant fees despite signs indicating that urinals are free. The toilets are plagued by poor management, cleanliness issues, and allegations of staff assault.

Complaints have been raised about the toilets being locked for most of the day, lack of maintenance, and the accumulation of dirt and waste around the buildings. In some instances, newly constructed toilets remain closed while existing ones have fallen into disrepair.

Contractors operating the toilets argue that the amount fixed by the municipality is insufficient, compelling them to collect fees from users. This situation has left passengers and locals frustrated, underscoring the urgent need for improved management and maintenance of public toilets in the district.
