Ankola/Gokarna: Coastal erosion caused by turbulent sea waves has resulted in significant damage to properties in the North Kannada district. In Harwada Tarangameta, a house was completely washed away by the sea, while neighbouring structures are facing imminent threats.

The incident occurred late Wednesday night following a sudden drop in barometric pressure, which stirred up the Arabian Sea and led to massive waves crashing onto the shore. Ashoka Harikantra’s house and coconut trees were uprooted, highlighting the destructive force of the ocean.

In Gokarna, the main beach near the Kariappa dyke witnessed a surge of sea waves on Thursday evening, causing severe damage to four shops and resorts. Two shops were completely swept away, while more than ten rooms suffered partial destruction. The force of the waves also breached the barriers of some shops, leaving them vulnerable to further damage.

A popular café, which had recently undergone extensive renovations at a significant cost, was completely washed away. The incident has instilled fear among local residents and business owners, who worry about the potential for more destruction if the situation continues.

Ganapu Jattaya Gowda, the owner of Café Ocean View, expressed his distress over the loss. He highlighted the café’s importance as a tourist attraction and the financial impact of the damage.

The turbulent sea conditions have also forced fishing boats from neighbouring districts and even other states to seek shelter in the Karwar region. The Baithakola fishing and commercial ports have seen an influx of boats seeking refuge from the rough seas.
