SIRSI (UTTARA KANNADA): Unable to afford a trip to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh Mela, 57-year-old Gowri found a unique way to bring the sacred river to her home—by digging a 40-foot-deep well in her backyard, entirely on her own.

This is not her first feat. In mid-2024, she had single-handedly dug a well for an Anganwadi, despite opposition from the district administration.

“Not everyone is fortunate enough to visit Mahakumbh. I couldn’t afford the journey, so I decided to bring ‘Ganga’ here,” said Gowri, who relies on her small agricultural land for livelihood. She began digging on December 15 and, working 6-8 hours daily, completed it in exactly two months. Now, with water flowing, she plans to take a holy dip on Maha Shivaratri.

Gowri has previously dug four wells—one for her farm, one for her village, and another for the Anganwadi in Sirsi. The latter was halted by authorities, but after public support and intervention from former MP Ananth Kumar Hegde, she completed a 45-foot-deep well, which remains in use.

Her latest endeavor has once again earned praise, proving her resilience and commitment to serving her community.
