In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Karnataka, the Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has identified seven scenic islands in Uttara Kannada district for eco-tourism development. The selected islands include Hog and Kirikonda (Bhatkal), Ankani Cheggudu (Ankola), and Kurumgad, Modhyalingad, Oyster, and Mongeraguda (Karwar taluk).

Under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, these islands will be equipped with wellness centres, adventure and nature camps, dive hubs, and tree huts. Locals have welcomed the initiative, expecting a boost in employment and the economy, but they also caution against ecological damage since these islands fall within coastal regulatory zones (CRZ) and are critical marine breeding grounds.

KMB CEO Jayaram Raipura assured that all CRZ rules would be followed, ruling out permanent structures like resorts. Instead, the aim is to offer sustainable tourism experiences without harming the delicate marine ecosystem. The district administration has been approached to transfer 59.26 acres of island land to KMB for the project, estimated at ₹131.51 crore. However, concerns remain about survey clarity and land documentation.

A senior Port Department official noted that 23 islands were initially shortlisted across three coastal districts, but these seven were chosen due to accessibility and eco-sensitivity. The project may expand to Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in the future.
