BJP Protests Postponement of Vijayapura Mayoral Polls
A delegation of BJP leaders, including MLCs N Ravikumar and S Keshavaprasad, has lodged a petition with State Election Commissioner G S Sangreshi, questioning the sudden deferment of Vijayapura City Municipal Corporation (VCMC) mayoral elections. The decision was made by Belagavi Regional Commissioner S B Shettennavar, sparking controversy.
Ravikumar urged the Election Commission to intervene, reinstate the polls, and disregard the regional commissioner’s justification. He further called for strict action against both Shettennavar and District In-charge Minister M B Patil.
Following the petition submission, BJP leaders alleged that Monday’s mayoral vote count stood at 24 for BJP and 22 for Congress when Shettennavar, under pressure from Patil, abruptly halted the elections. Ravikumar termed the move as a deliberate attempt to overturn the mandate.
Prasad added that Patil, realizing Congress was trailing, raised objections regarding the election process. Despite the objections lacking merit, Shettennavar proceeded to postpone the polls, he claimed.
The BJP delegation asserted that they have provided detailed evidence to the Election Commission, highlighting what they call an unfair political maneuver against their party.
