The district police superintendent Rohan Jagadish announced that the theft at Shantadurga Jewellers near the city’s Tontadarya Math was solved within six hours, with the suspect arrested and jewellery worth ₹80 lakh recovered. The swift breakthrough was revealed during a press conference held at the Town Police Station on Thursday.
Suspect stayed in lodge for a week before break-in
The accused, identified as Mohammad Husain, son of Mohammad Mustafa Siddiqui from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, had been staying in a lodge adjacent to the jewellery shop for a week prior to the incident. According to the SP, the suspect used a gas cutter to cut through the iron bars of a third-floor window of the shop before entering and stealing gold items.
Police teams reviewed CCTV footage from the surrounding area and scrutinised lodge records, which helped establish the suspect’s escape route toward Maharashtra.
Coordinated interstate operation leads to arrest
SP Jagadish shared that the district police sought assistance from their counterparts in Solapur and Sangli districts of Maharashtra. Based on shared intelligence, police teams traced the suspect and arrested him near Kinni Naka.
All stolen items were recovered, along with the gas cutter and other tools used in the burglary. The SP commended the coordinated efforts that led to the rapid resolution of the case.
