Tensions flared in Kamalnagar town of Bidar district after four people were arrested for allegedly slaughtering a cow in a shed along Rampur Road on Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, police raided the location, rescued four calves, and arrested the accused. The rescued animals were shifted to a goshala, according to SP Pradeep Gunti.
The incident triggered outrage among BJP workers, Bajrang Dal, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists. Protests broke out in the town, with shops forced shut and tyres set ablaze on the streets. Demonstrators raised slogans against the state government and staged a procession with the cow’s remains before conducting its burial.
In a separate incident in Gurusunagi village, Vadagera taluk (Yadgir district), suspected cow smugglers fled after Bajrang Dal activists stormed a shed where cattle were reportedly being slaughtered. The activists claimed that over 20 cows had been killed, and they discovered beef, horns, and hide at the site. Two cows were rescued from the location.
Vadagera Sub-Inspector Mehboob Ali visited the scene and conducted a mahazar (on-site inspection). A case has been filed at the Vadagera police station.
These incidents have reignited tensions around cow protection laws, vigilantism, and communal flare-ups in parts of Karnataka.
