When schools across the state reopened after the summer holidays, students at the government school in Dariyapur village, Shahpur taluk, were met not with classrooms but with ankle-deep water and sewage.
Overnight heavy rainfall had led to waterlogging in the school premises, worsened by waste water spilling out from a choked drainage system. The students, many of them young children, had no choice but to wade through the filthy water to reach their classrooms.
Locals blamed the situation on blocked drains and slammed authorities for negligence. “This is not the first time. Every year we face the same mess. Our children’s health and safety are at stake, and officials have done nothing,” said a concerned parent from the village.
The incident highlights the fragile state of civic infrastructure in rural schools, especially during the monsoon. With the academic year just beginning, parents are demanding urgent cleanup and proper drainage measures to ensure children aren’t forced to study in such hazardous conditions.
