Students Greeted by Flooded Classrooms on Reopening Day in Yadgir
Yadgir: On the first day back to school after the summer holidays, students of the government school in Dariyapur village, Shahpur taluk, were met with an unexpected challenge—flooded school grounds caused by stagnant rain and sewage water.
Overnight downpours led to the complete inundation of the school premises. Wastewater from an overflowing, clogged drain mixed with the rainwater, creating an unsanitary and unsafe environment for children and staff.
To reach their classrooms, students had to trudge through ankle-deep water, sparking concern among parents and community members. Locals pointed fingers at civic officials, accusing them of failing to maintain the village’s drainage systems properly.
Residents expressed frustration, claiming that repeated complaints regarding blocked drains had been ignored. “We warned the authorities well before the rains arrived, but no action was taken. Now our children are suffering,” a villager said.
The situation has highlighted long-standing infrastructural neglect in the area. Many parents are now hesitant to send their children to school under such unhygienic conditions, fearing waterborne diseases and other health risks.
Community members have demanded immediate intervention from the district administration to clear the drains, restore sanitation, and ensure a safe environment for the students.
The incident underscores the urgent need for better drainage planning and regular maintenance in rural schools and public spaces, especially ahead of the monsoon.
